Printing
on Remote Client Computer using Windows XP, 2000 when using
a USB printer
On Terminal Services Server (FILE
SERVER running Windows 2000 Server with Terminal Services):
Go into printers folder, add a
printer using LPT2 or LPT3 or LPT4 (make sure it is
a port that is not being used by another printer.
We're going to create a "dummy printer"
Use the same driver as the printer the
client computer has. Example: if client has All In
One Officejet d135 on Windows XP /2000, then install on
the server the equivalent driver for Win2000. You
must have the CD available in case the server does not
have the driver or you can downloaded from the web
Label the printer Do Not Delete.
Make sure this printer IS NOT THE DEFAULT. Otherwise
users will not be able to print.
On the
Client computer (PC trying to connect to SERVER that runs
Win98, XP or 2000):
Setup the actual driver and make sure
that the client computer can print without connecting to
terminal services
After doing a test page and it works,
share the printer on your workstation (remember the name
and make sure is a short name. You going to need the
sharing name of this printer and the name of your
workstation)
Setup a second printer on LPT1 with the
same driver as the printer you want to print on this
assumes that LPT1 is not used in your workstation.
Otherwise use LPT2 or so on).
You should have two printers now.
One on LPT1 (nothing is connected to this LPT1 port) and
one on the USB or Network connection that actually prints
Create the following file: START

C:\WINDOWS\MAPF.BAT" / Press the ENTER KEY / ADD THE
FOLLOWING 2 TEXT LINES:
NET USE LPT1: /D
NET USE LPT1: \\replacewithComputerName\replacewithPrinterSharingName

the program
Right click on your desktop / New
Shortcut / browse and select "c:\windows\mapf.bat"

Drives" / save shortcut

users desktops by right clicking on START / explore all
users / All Users / Desktop.
Make sure you add (copy and paste) this
shortcut also to STARTUP folder so it executes every time
the computer boots up. Right click on START /
Explore all users / Programs / Startup
Execute the shortcut "Connect Network
Drives" by double clicking on it
Make sure that the LPT1 port is the
default printer before you connect to terminal services

local machine
